Utilizing AI

How Much of This Did I Write?

Where is the line between using AI to assist in writing a blog post and using AI to write a blog post for you? I’m not sure, but I’m going to try to stay on the right side of it. I’m not going to use AI to write a blog post for me, but I am going to use AI to assist me in writing a blog post.

I’m going to use GPT-3 to generate some text for me, and then I’m going to edit that text to make it my own. I’m going to use OpenAI’s API to generate the text, and I’m going to use OpenAI’s Playground to edit the text.

I’m going to start with a prompt that I write myself, and then I’m going to use the Playground to generate some text based on that prompt. I’m going to copy that text into my blog post, and then I’m going to edit it to make it my own.

I paid for GitHub Copilot, which is turned on as I write this. I started typing some words. Copilot suggested some words. I used some of those words. I edited some of those words. I deleted some of those words. I added some of my own words. I’m not sure how much of this I wrote, but I’m pretty sure I wrote most of it.

Did I? How useful is this? Is this plagiarism? What if I told you I only typed about 100 characters total in this post? Would you believe me? Would you believe me if I told you I typed 1000 characters? 10,000? Can I claim this article as my own?

I’m not sure. I’m going to try to stay on the right side of the line. I’m going to try to use AI to assist me in writing a blog post, but I’m not going to use AI to write a blog post for me.

I’m a fan of GitHub Copilot. It has definitely increased the speed in which I can write code. I still need to verify that the code it wrote is actually what I wanted, but that’s a bit beside the point. I know it was built off the hard work of millions of developers that were not paid for helping to create the tool that (probably) hundreds of thousands of developers are now paying for. I’m not sure how I feel about that.

Anyway, it’s not a perfect tool. It sometimes gets things wrong, and it definitely still doesn’t read all that naturally. So you can probably tell that it wrote the vast majority of this article. How do you feel about that?
